Depending on its subsequent use the pig iron can be of the following grades:
- grades P1 and P2 when used for steelmaking;
- grades PL1 and PL2 when used for casting.

Chemical composition depends on grade, group, class and category.
- Grades P1, P2, PL1, PL2: mass fraction of Si: max 1.2%.
- Groups I, II, III, IV: mass fraction of Mn: max 1.5%.
- Classes A, B, V: mass fraction of P: max 0.3%.
- Categories I, II, III, IV, V: mass fraction of S: max 0.06%.
- The grades PL1 x PL2 can be produced with the mass fraction of C being 4%-4.5%.
